Being a successful black woman in the film industry means navigating a landscape that historically hasn’t always welcomed diversity or offered equitable opportunities. It’s about breaking barriers, shattering stereotypes, and paving the way for future generations. It requires resilience in the face of systemic challenges and a fierce determination to tell stories that reflect the richness and diversity of black experiences. Success for a black woman in the film industry is not only measured by accolades and achievements but also by the impact she has in reshaping narratives, inspiring others, and advocating for inclusivity both on and off the screen. It’s about embracing one’s identity, celebrating individuality, and using one’s platform to amplify voices that have been marginalized for too long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we speak of successful black women, we think of Actress Tiffany Burgess who has starred in one of the most iconic roles in the remake of the film, The Color Purple.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film which came out in theaters in 2023 is an American musical film directed by Blitz Bazawule. In this beautiful masterpiece of a film, Tiffany Elle Burgess plays the role of Olivia, Celie\u2019s daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film won, \u201cOutstanding Motion Picture\u2019 at this year\u2019s NAACP Image Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had the pleasure to speak with the actress and learn more about what her magical moment in the film meant to her, as well as discover that outside of acting, she is an author! Tiffany is releasing her third children\u2019s book!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What would you say the experience was like being cast in such a historic film?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was such an honor to be cast in a historic film. Sometimes I am still in awe! I am a huge fan of The Color Purple\u2014the book, the 1985 version, and the Broadway Musical. It is iconic, especially in the Black community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did you prepare yourself for the role in Color Purple? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I read through the script and really tried to put myself in Olivia\u2019s place\u2014meaning how would I feel if I were reunited with my mother after 35+ years?! I wanted to tap into that emotion and sit in it. We rehearsed the scene as a cast and had an acting session with Susan Batson, a renowned acting coach. I hope the scene evoked emotion in the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you get a chance to speak to Oprah and if so what was something amazing that you took from the conversation?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, I did. Oprah shared that The Color Purple changed her life for the better and that hopefully, it would do the same for us. She was correct. It has definitely provided me with opportunities beyond my imagination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 The film won \u201cOutstanding Motion Picture\u201d at this year\u2019s NAACP Image Awards. How do you feel knowing you were part of this achievement? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I attended the NAACP Image Awards<\/a> and went on stage with the rest of the cast to receive the award. I am so grateful to be a part of this achievement. The moment was so surreal. This film will be a classic and I hope it entertains audiences for many, many years just like the 1985 version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was an amazing cast of stars, what was it like working around so much talent?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a blessing to be around so many talented actors and actresses. The energy on set was amazing. It was like being at a black family reunion in my opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Hampton University, what made you move into the field of acting?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also have a Master of Public Health degree from Emory University. However, I have always been creative. I have been writing since I was 6 years old. I wrote my first screenplay in 2016 and decided to move in front of the camera in 2019 when I started taking acting classes at Premiere Actor\u2019s Network.<\/p>\n\n\n

Outside of acting, you are also the author of three children\u2019s books. Are you working on any more books?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I plan to write more, including a follow-up to my first book, Skin Like Mine.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you feel makes a great actor? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Willingness to step outside of your comfort zone and really become the character. Learn your character\u2019s back story and if they don\u2019t have one, create it. Figure out who the character is and embody that person.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 What upcoming projects are you expected to soon be involved in?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My partners and I own Tyler Street Films<\/a>, a production company based in Atlanta, GA. We are currently working on pitching a television series. I also audition all of the time. I am hoping to land another big role either in film or television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
